Catherine Faherty, True Grit on and off the Ice

The 2019 George McLaughlin Award Winner

Catherine Faherty is a fighter, on and off the ice and court. Catherine Faherty, a 14 year old from Norwell MA, has the world in front of her as she enters her freshman year of high school this Fall. Although Catherine was born with Spina Bifida, she’s a two-sport firecracker in wheelchair basketball and sled hockey.

Catherine’s favorite sport is sled hockey. Catherine is also part of the UNH Wildcats Sled Hockey Team. Catherine also plays wheelchair basketball and has been playing competitively for 3 years with the Ryan Martin Foundation Trojans Wheelchair Basketball Team. This past July, Catherine participated in the 11th Annual Ryan Martin Foundation Wheelchair Basketball hosted by Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT.

The Hartford Courant ran a front page story which described the camp best that is more to do with the fire on the court inside than the weather outside – “Heated Competition”! In two words that really sums up the spark that drives Catherine Faherty.

“I have been playing sled hockey since I was six and this season will be my second season on the USA Women’s National Sled Hockey Team.” - Catherine Faherty
